Reflections and Prayers by Fr Jack Finnegan SDB
1st Reading – Proverbs 8:22-31
The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago.
Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth.
When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water.
Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth ?
when he had not yet made earth and fields, or he world’s first bits of soil.
When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,
when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep,
when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always,
rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race.
Reflection
The hymn in Proverbs 8 introduces us to Sophia, Divine Wisdom; the one who is God’s companion in the work of creation. In effect, Sophia becomes the basis of human experience of God. She is the precursor of both the Logos and the Holy Spirit. She is the first step on the road to our doctrine of the Trinity. Sophia helps us grow into the truth about God and the truth about ourselves. She helps us to be human, to be lovers of God, people of communion, people of true compassion. Sophia shows us the way to transformed hearts and minds. She is the loving kenosis, the wise self-emptying that makes our union with God real in the world. Not only does she teach us to love God’s creation, through her wisdom we become servants of Trinity: creative people, healing presences, empowerers, respecters of equality and genuine difference. Creation welcomes the Trinity. The Trinity welcomes creation because Trinity is loving relationship, and loving relationship is the very basis of creation. Can we embrace that thought and live it in reality?
Prayer
LORD, Adonai, sow seeds of Holy Wisdom deep in our hearts. Let your limitless love flow deeply within our lives and relationships. Let Sophia whisper words of encouragement and life to us when we stumble. Let her work her creative crafts in our midst today! Let her play your songs on the surface of the earth! Wonderful God! Touch us with your wisdom from on high! Wonderful Trinity! Wonderful Love! Listen to our songs of praise today! Amen and Amen.
Psalm 8:4-9
Reflection
Our psalm sings of creation and of God as breath-taking Creator of all that is! How wonderful is God’s awesome Name in all the earth! Everything is the work of God’s fingers. Can you imagine God’s fingers knitting the cosmos: sun and moon, the stars in the night sky, people and all living things, fish and all sea creatures, birds and bees, trees and plants of every kind! Our Triune God teaches us to welcome the cosmos as one with God and us. And we are called to responsibility, to wisdom, to care and respect for all God’s creation. We don’t own creation. We are its caretakers. Are we up to the task? Are we up to building solidarity with the oppressed, especially the most economically deprived on the planet? Are we open, like God, to bring in the outsiders? Are we ready to stand up for a new creation, a new way of living that respects the planet and everyone in it, our shared home?
Prayer
LORD, Adonai, how wonderful is your glorious name through all the earth! You have knitted the whole cosmos with your own fingers! Remind us that we are called to responsibility, to wisdom, to care and respect for all your creation. Remind us that we don’t own creation. We are its caretakers. May we be as mindful of the earth as you are of us! You shower us with love! You gift us with wisdom! You call us to care for the earth and all living beings! You call us into your loving presence! You invite us to practise loving-kindness towards all the works of your hands! Accept our songs of gratitude! Strengthen us in our weakness! Let us not turn from your wise and loving ways. Amen and Amen.
2nd Reading: Romans 5:1-5
Brothers and sisters, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
Reflection
Paul teaches us that Christian experience has three loving dimensions: trinity. The Father is the loving source of both creation and redemption. Jesus gives his life in love that all of creation might be healed and liberated. The Holy Spirit poured into our hearts graces us to make real what Jesus did for us in our everyday world. Divine Love becomes the source of new life for each one of us. The presence of Sophia-Wisdom always reminds us of the centrality of love not only in divine nature but in everything God does. Trinity is Love! Trinity is communion of life and love. Trinity is dance not isolation. Trinity is the redeeming mystery of sheer inclusion and oneness we meet as new and bright every day. The challenge today is to go beyond mathematics and rediscover the Trinity as active, loving, inclusive and creative relationship, a way of relating that heals and empowers. The implications are obvious.
Prayer
Lord Jesus may we be lovingly justified by faith today! Through you may we have lasting peace with God! Gift us with your strength and grace, especially in our moments of loss and hardship! Fill us with hope! Fan into flame the love of God the Spirit has poured so lavishly into our hearts! Father, draw us to your loving heart! Jesus, draw us in your living streams of life and creativity! Spirit, drench us in your living waters! Fall on us! Blow like a mighty wind through our lives! Inflame us! Melt us and mould us! Use us to build a better, more caring and inclusive world! Make us a people of hope! Amen and Amen.
Gospel Reading: John 16:12-15
Jesus said to his disciples, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”
Reflection
Can you hear the echoes of Trinity in John’s words? Jesus brings us the gift of loving revelation from the Father. The Spirit makes the message of Jesus glow meaningfully in every generation, touching hearts and minds. The dazzling love of Trinity weaves and knits its way into every aspect of life, especially in the spaces where truth and beauty, love and wisdom are honoured. God is Love! But we are free. We have the power to pervert love, to turn away from wisdom and put our intelligence to dark purposes. We have the power to betray Trinity. Are we ready to let God’s own wisdom awaken us to God’s radiant glory in practical, earth-saving, mother-loving ways? Can we put Trinity back in our lives? Can we put Trinity back in the Church? All it will take is the Spirit-given power to live in union with each other, with creation and with God. Is that too much to ask? Friendship lies at the heart of Trinity, friendship and love. Can we embrace the implications of faith in a God who is relational, passionate, affable, outreaching and redeeming? Can we imagine a world infused with such wonderful qualities? What can we do about it?
Prayer
Lord Jesus you call us to bear lovely fruit, fruit that will last. May your loving Spirit guide us into the truth, beauty and goodness of life to the full! Reveal the Father to us every day! Lead us in the Spirit deep into the Father’s loving embrace, into the loving heart of Trinity! Through the Spirit everything the Father gave you is shared with us! How wonderful that awesome gift! Each day we are offered the precious grace of transforming union! Each day we are drenched in your love! May we be ever true to your marvellous gifts! May your Spirit inspire us and empower us to walk in life-giving ways! May your Spirit teach us the healing paths of sacred compassion! May the Spirit show us a Triune God who is relational, passionate, affable, outreaching and redeeming, loving all that is! And may we glorify you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit now and forever! Amen and Amen.
